This update brings comprehensive improvements to the calculation engine, resource management, result visualization, and account experience. The highlight is the new SCE-UA algorithm in the
Estimation
calculation engine, providing a more powerful option for parameter optimization.

New Features

SCE-UA for More Powerful Parameter Estimation

The
Estimation
calculation engine now supports the SCE-UA (Shuffled Complex Evolution - University of Arizona) algorithm. SCE-UA is a population-based global optimization method: it evolves several groups of candidate parameter sets, called Complexes, and periodically shuffles them so that useful search information can be shared.

As with any optimization algorithm, one successful run does not prove that the global optimum has been found. For important studies, comparing different initialization methods and hyperparameters is recommended.

In our tests, SCE-UA generally provides faster computation and better solution accuracy than the GA algorithm.

More Initialization Sample Methods

Uncertainty
and
Estimation
now support four methods for generating initial samples:

Method

How it works

Seed behavior

LHS

Latin Hypercube Sampling divides each variable range into strata and selects one point from each stratum, providing broad coverage with relatively few samples.

Reproducible when Fixed Initial Seed is enabled.

Sobol

A deterministic low-discrepancy sequence that distributes points evenly across a multi-dimensional space.

Deterministic; it does not use a seed.

Sobol (Scrambled)

A scrambled Sobol sequence that keeps low-discrepancy coverage while adding controlled variation between runs.

Reproducible when Fixed Initial Seed is enabled.

Uniform

Draws independent random points uniformly within each variable range. It is a simple baseline, although random clustering can occur.

Reproducible when Fixed Initial Seed is enabled.

Choose
LHS
or
Sobol (Scrambled)
when broad and reproducible coverage is important,
Sobol
when a deterministic sequence is preferred, and
Uniform
as a simple random baseline.

Seed: Reproducible Initial Samples

Enable Fixed Initial Seed and enter an integer from
1
to
4294967295
. As long as the Project values, initialization method, sample or population size, and seed remain the same, SIMPO will generate the same initial samples. This makes comparisons and troubleshooting much easier.

Turning Fixed Initial Seed off produces a different random initialization on each run.

The seed controls the initialization stage. To reproduce a complete calculation, other calculation settings must also remain the same.

The
Sobol
method is deterministic and is not affected by the seed.

The
BioModel
,
DataSet
, and
Project
lists now support grouping. Resources can be organized by topic, experiment, or project stage, making them easier to find and maintain.

In
PointSettlingTank

Simulation
and
Optimum
result charts,
Outlet
and
Blanket
are now displayed together. This makes related results easier to compare in a single view.

Before performing complex dynamic simulations, obtaining accurate initial values is often a challenging step. Previously, users might have had to manually extend calculation times repeatedly to "brute-force" a steady-state solution, which was time-consuming and laborious.

In this new version, we are officially introducing an automated Steady State Calculation feature. It's incredibly simple to use: simply enable the Steady State toggle in the Console and run the calculation to obtain the steady-state solution. Furthermore, the steady-state solution can be assigned with one click to the initial values of
Variables
to directly proceed with subsequent dynamic simulations.

To ensure efficient and accurate calculations, the Steady State calculation engine employs the following logic:

Unified Time Basis: During calculation,
TimeUnit
will be forcibly set to "day".

Intelligent Loop Prevention: The maximum calculation period for
Measured
is set to 10,000 days.

Stable Inputs: Steady-state calculation requires stable input values. Thus, only the first and last rows of
Measured
results are retained; while only the first row of
Inflow
and
Flow
is retained.

Precise Stopping Criterion: The system truncates the calculation results of each round to 4 decimal places (this operation is stored in a separate variable and absolutely does not affect the original calculation precision). When this truncated result remains unchanged for 10,000 consecutive times, the system will determine that equilibrium has been reached, automatically stop the calculation, and output the final steady-state solution.

Performance Boost: Intelligent Common Factor Extraction – The More Complex, The Faster!

In the world of computation, speed is paramount.

In the new version, the calculation engine for
BioModel.Matrix.Rate
has received an upgrade: the system will now automatically extract common factors when calculating rate equations, an algorithmic improvement that significantly reduces redundant calculations. Typically, the more complex the rate equation, the more pronounced the performance improvement.

Key Takeaway: The more complex and deeply nested your model's rate equations are, the more significant the speedup brought by this optimization will be!

Go ahead and experience the smooth performance of the new version firsthand.

In SIMPO, after each computation, the program automatically generates a series of complex graphics based on the calculation engine. To maximize plotting efficiency, we've introduced multiprocessing (leveraging multi-core CPUs for parallel processing) to accelerate this process.

However, in certain specific scenarios, multiprocessing plotting can trigger a
BrokenProcessPool
error, leading to plotting interruptions. To address this critical issue, we've optimized the plotting functionality in SIMPO 1.0.1.
This version ensures that when the program encounters this error, it will automatically switch to the main process, guaranteeing the completion of the plotting procedure.

System Platform Differences and Recommendations

We've observed that
BrokenProcessPool
errors are more common on Windows (and rare on Ubuntu).
This is likely due to the difference in how
Windows
uses
spawn
to start child processes, whereas
Linux
typically uses
fork
.

Consequently, users on Ubuntu systems generally benefit from faster computation speeds, more stable multiprocessing operations, and better compatibility.

For a smoother, faster, and more stable computing experience, we strongly recommend performing SIMPO computations within an Ubuntu environment.

Still manually transferring model parameters from papers into the software one by one? Not anymore.

SIMPO 1.0.0 now fully integrates with Gemini 3. You can now simply drag and drop your SCI paper's PDF file into the software, and the AI will automatically parse and extract key information, generating a BioModel with a single click!

Workflow: Import PDF -> AI Parsing -> Simple Human Verification -> Model Ready.

Result: Modeling work that used to take hours is now done in minutes.

In a nutshell: The process from "paper" to "computable model" has been significantly compressed, especially suitable for scenarios requiring rapid replication of literature models, batch modeling, or team collaboration and sharing.

pH calculation has never been as simple as "inputting a formula": ionic speciation, dissociation equilibrium, quantitative descriptions… each step is prone to pitfalls.

To address this, we've built the Ionization module within BioModel. Now, you only need to provide quantitative descriptions for each ion, and SIMPO can effortlessly and accurately perform complex pH calculations. No more manually setting up equations; let the software handle chemical equilibrium.

Input Optimization: Backspace will no longer unintentionally exit the page when unsaved, providing a more secure input experience.

Download Optimization: Client download size significantly reduced (installation time is slightly longer than before).

Page Optimizations:

Better adaptive support for various screen sizes.

Collapsible left-side menu in the Dashboard: More usable space.

Top pop-up notifications no longer overlap: Clearer information.

Wastewater treatment process models, such as the Activated Sludge Model (ASM) series, are crucial tools for research, simulation, and design in environmental engineering. However, as these models become increasingly complex, their development, application, and validation pose significant challenges for researchers, engineers, and even peer reviewers. Traditional software often suffers from steep learning curves, cumbersome operations, a lack of collaborative features, and high costs. This not only hinders the widespread adoption and innovation of these models but also restricts the application and improvement of water treatment technologies in developing countries. Addressing this critical need, the author's team has developed SIMPO— a free, zero-barrier, open, and shareable SaaS cloud platform. The platform aims to significantly lower the threshold for wastewater treatment process modeling through a code-free, drag-and-drop graphical interface, while integrating advanced algorithms to ensure the professionalism, accuracy, and reliability of the models.

Compared to traditional modeling software like AQUASIM, SIMPO offers a simpler, more convenient, and smoother modeling process. SIMPO simplifies complex modeling into intuitive drag-and-drop operations, combined with an AI-driven core for model building, achieving "zero-barrier" modeling:

AQUASIM: Users must manually input variables, define processes, partition units, set connections, configure time steps, and edit plots within multi-level dialog boxes, resulting in a complex and non-intuitive workflow.

SIMPO: Users only need to follow three straightforward steps: "Edit Model (BioModel)" → "Drag-and-Drop to Build Process (DataSet)" → "Automatically Generate Project and Calculate (Project)". The platform automatically handles time stepping and result plotting.

Figure 1. Comparison of modelling processes between AQUASIM and SIMPO.

SIMPO's platform is powerful, covering the entire process from input, simulation, to evaluation and sharing. Figures 2 and 3 illustrate SIMPO's core operational interfaces:

Visual Matrix Editing: Chemical stoichiometric and rate expressions are edited in a matrix format, consistent with ASM series models. The system provides color block highlighting to effectively prevent input errors.

Drag-and-Drop Flow Chart Design:: Users can rapidly build complex wastewater treatment process flowsheet designs by simply dragging and dropping with the mouse, much like assembling building blocks.

To further lower the learning curve for water treatment process modeling, the team has recently developed an AI-assisted modeling function. SIMPO, by leveraging large language models such as Gemini 3, can automatically read text and diagrams from research papers to generate biochemical models (Biomodel).

Accuracy and Performance Guaranteed

The reliability of a new tool must be rigorously validated. The research team selected a classic case study to compare SIMPO's simulation results against the industry benchmark software, AQUASIM.

As shown in Figure 4, in batch and continuous reactor simulations of the biological nutrient removal model, SIMPO's simulation curves almost perfectly overlap with those of AQUASIM, achieving a weighted Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (WNSE) above 0.999. This demonstrates that SIMPO maintains operational simplicity while matching the computational accuracy of professional software.

Figure 4. Using the predicted results of AQUASIM as measured data to test the computational accuracy of SIMPO, a high WNSE almost equal to 1 indicates good consistency between SIMPO and AQUASIM in accuracy.

Intelligent Error Correction Assistant

SIMPO's built-in automatic balance checking and visual result evaluation features help researchers identify subtle errors or deficiencies in published models that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Case 1: Detecting Errors in Stoichiometric Matrices

Figure 5 demonstrates SIMPO's performance when checking an extended ASM3 model. By inputting theoretical oxygen demand and nitrogen balance terms, the platform successfully detected three stoichiometric errors in the original literature and precisely pinpointed the specific reaction processes involved. This provides clear direction for model correction.

Figure 5.
Case 2: Revealing Model Structural Deficiencies

Figure 6 recreates an autotrophic denitrification model. SIMPO's automatic plotting immediately detected two issues with the model:

Elemental sulfur exhibited negative concentrations (physically unrealistic).

The simulation of nitrite nitrogen was poor.

By introducing a simple "switch function" to correct the model structure, the negative concentration issue was successfully resolved. Simultaneously, the visual results clearly showed that the original model's poor fitting of nitrite nitrogen was masked due to plotting scale issues. This highlights the importance of automation and interactive visualization in model evaluation.

Figure 6.
For advanced analytical needs, SIMPO integrates professional algorithms such as sensitivity analysis, uncertainty assessment, and parameter estimation.

Sensitivity Analysis

In SIMPO, sensitivity analysis is used to identify sensitive and highly correlated parameters, thereby reducing the number of parameters to be evaluated in subsequent steps and improving computational efficiency.

Through OAT (One at a Time) single-factor analysis, key parameters with the greatest impact on model output can be quickly identified.

Correlation heatmaps help discover highly correlated parameter groups, thus reducing the number of parameters to be estimated and enhancing the efficiency of subsequent analyses.

Figure 7.
不确定性评估（Uncertainty Assessment）

Uncertainty Assessment

SIMPO provides professional uncertainty assessment algorithms. Through Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, it can be used to evaluate how parameter uncertainty propagates to model outputs, analyze parameter and model output distributions, identify equifinality, and narrow down parameter ranges. The results of uncertainty assessment are intuitively evaluated from different angles through various visual forms, including Probability Density Function (PDF) plots, Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF) plots, Band plots, Density plots, and Skeleton plots.

Figure 8. (A) The PDF and CDF plots of the uncertainty assessment in SIMPO; (B) The Band plots; (C) The Density plots; (D) The Skeleton plots.

Parameter Estimation

SIMPO employs the Genetic Algorithm (GA) for parameter estimation. SIMPO offers various computational settings, allowing for a flexible balance between computational efficiency and solution accuracy. The computational results from several different evaluation methods are presented in Table 1:

The Large GA yields the highest accuracy but requires significant time due to its large scale, reaching a WNSE of 0.99161 in 267 seconds after approximately 1,394 iterations.

The Small GA has a smaller computational scale, resulting in slightly lower accuracy but extremely short computation times, achieving a WNSE of 0.99019 in just 0.83 seconds after only 25 iterations.

Uncertainty also achieves high accuracy but is the most time-consuming, reaching a WNSE of 0.99161 in 4,658 seconds after approximately 880,510 iterations.

Table 1. Comparison of the optimal results.

A More User-Friendly, Open, and Intelligent Platform

Compared to traditional and commercial software such as AQUASIM, BioWin, and GPS-X, SIMPO offers significant advantages in terms of usability, editability, shareability, and cost (Table 2). It is not only the first open-source, free, cloud-native SaaS platform for wastewater treatment modeling but also innovatively integrates AI tools to help users quickly understand literature models.

Since 1987, the International Association on Water Quality (IAWQ) working group released a series of mathematical models for wastewater treatment processes (such as ASM1, ASM2, ASM2d, ASM3, and ADM1), which established a general framework for the removal of pollutants like organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus. These models have become powerful tools for the research and practice of wastewater treatment processes.

However, as research deepens, the scope of wastewater treatment process modeling has expanded to include various complex processes (such as nitrous oxide emissions, and sulfur autotrophic denitrification). Although these expansions have increased the applicability of the models, they have also introduced exponentially growing complexity. The biochemical stoichiometry matrix has become increasingly large, the number of model components and parameters has increased, and the computational demands have risen, creating significant obstacles for researchers and engineers.

To address these challenges and opportunities, we developed SIMPO (Simplified Intelligent Modelling Platform Online，https://www.simpowater.org), a next-generation platform aimed at simplifying and promoting wastewater treatment modelling. SIMPO offers an intuitive drag-and-drop user interface, adaptive algorithms, and collaborative tools, bridging the gap between complex modeling capabilities and practical accessibility, enabling users to easily handle traditional ASM models and various modern cutting-edge models.

SIMPO's innovations address critical limitations of traditional platforms:

1、Interaction and visualization of GUI provide a user-friendly modelling approach

Intuitive tools, such as candidate boxes and color coding, visually assist in correctly inputting variables and parameters in a complex matrix.

The drag-and-drop GUI simplifies the design of complex wastewater treatment processes to the point of simply adding and connecting tanks on a webpage.

The automatic drawing display helps users quickly, comprehensively, and intuitively understand the simulation and evaluation results.

2、Dynamic algorithm ensures the accuracy and efficiency of modelling

SIMPO adopts self-adjusting solvers to ensure computational efficiency without affecting accuracy, which is evaluated by weighted Nash Sutcliffe efficiency (WNSE).

Dynamic real time step size optimization can alleviate common pitfalls such as negative concentration, which is a frequent problem in traditional tools.

3、Automatic error-proofing and intuitive display help to quickly identify errors

Balance checking can help users review the rationality of stoichiometry matrices from a theoretical perspective.

NSE intuitively reflects the goodness-of-fit of various variables, and the automated and interactive display of results exposes the problem of certain variables being obscured by graphical scales.

4、Advanced evaluation algorithms bring comprehensive and systematic understanding of models

Sensitivity analysis identifies sensitive parameters and their correlations, reducing the number of parameters to enhance computational efficiency.

Uncertainty assessment evaluates the uncertainty of each parameter, determines the predicted range of model outputs, and refines parameter ranges for more accurate simulations.

Parameter estimation identifies the local optima of parameters that best fit the measured data, ensuring robust and reliable model calibration.

5、Collaborative science facilitates the dissemination, exchange, and development of models

SIMPO supports version-controlled models, data and results sharing, provides public/private repositories, and advocates a new type of peer review workflow for modelling papers, in line with the principles of open science.
